Welcom to Learn Chinese Pod, best place to learn Mandarin Chinese
April 11th, 2006
Hi there,
Thank you for visiting learnchinesepod.com. My name is Yao and am the founder of this pod cast. I started teaching Mandarin Chinese since 1999 in Shanghai and currently giving Chinese in New York City. Not long time ago, I discovered Podcasting and amazed by it’s philosophy and popularity(Along with Steve Job’s famous and cute iPOD!!)
I have successful teaching experience and published Mandarin Chinese related book. My objective is to develop the best podcasting material to support worldwide Mandarin learners. I don’t want to repeat the advantage of learning languages through podcasting… as if you are here reading this posting, you should well be aware of this.
We are still in the experimental period and critically need your feedback. We would love to hear any of your opinions, suggestions and/or ideas.
We also need volunteers joining this great project in various aspect such as web development, marketing research. Please let us know if you are interested.

Hi Yao and Kevin,
yours is the best podcast for learning Mandarin by far! I like the slow pace and the clear instructions. Great idea also to have Kevin represent your listeners. I listen to your podcast every day on the way to work. No other Mandarin course has worked for me so far but with yours I have made progress. When is the next episode coming out?

Ni Hao Yao and Kevin,
I have enjoyed learning from your first 5 lessons and am hoping you will continue with your podcasts.
Do you plan to do more?
Cathy

I was so glad to find your podcast on itunes store and was very excited to see that you were offering lessons. However, I can’t download audio 1-4. and haven’t seen any new podcasts since April 26th. are you going to be making more?
6. admin | June 2nd, 2006 at 7:23 pm
Hi Angie,
1)I am very surprised that you can’t download the audio 1-4. I tried many times and didn’t experience any problem. Did you try to download through iTunes or directly on this website?! I am wondering if there is anybody else have the same problem??
2) Yes, next one is coming very soon.

It’s true, the podcasts cannot be downloaded from the web site. The html links are wrong, it seems, because each file has a similar file name, all starting with april-21st-
The error message is “file not found”.
Also the PDFs seem to have the wrong filenames. They are represented as mp3 files, so for each lesson there are offered two files by the same name with different file sizes, both supposedly mp3 files, and both unobtainable.

Hmm, I don’t think the date part of the file name is the problem, but the files are still not downloadable. I went to Yahoo Podcasts and managed to grab some more from there, with a bit of effort. The files you get from there are not the files you think you’re downloading, but if you download all ten you’ll get most of the five lessons. Oh dear

Hi Sue,
I spent last two hours to trouble shoot and finally realize that it’s a bug in the software I am using. It’s a conflict with the download statistics function, which means that I have turn off the download statistics. I would have no idea how many downloads we had for each episode. But anyway, it’s not the most important thing for me now…
Thank you for your postings.

Ni Hao,Yao:
I just discovered your podcast. It is great. I especially appreciate that you are using both a native speaker (you) and an american student (Kevan) to demonstrate. It is very valuable to hear how our linguistic peculiarities translate to Mandarin compared to your pronunciations. I have always found that to be a difficulty, particularly when learning non-european languages. That is, either the teacher is a native speaker and I can never quite get it; Or the teacher is an anglo-american fluent in the language, but the pronunciation is not quite right.
I work in the automotive industry and have many Mandarin speaking coworkers. I can’t wait to practice with them!
Thanks
David

Ni Hao Yao,
I just ran across your pod casts and I think that they are great. I am a beginning learner and I have found them very helpful. I would also like to offer my services to you. I can proofread or work on docs for you. Just let me know how I can be of service. I would like to see your pod cast up for years to come.

Hi! Just bumped into your podcasts on the Apple site. They are very well done and I appreciate what you are doing.

Hi Yao,
I have also just discovered the podcast, and agree with all the comments. The pace is perfect, especially for listening to on the bicycle on the way to and from work. For some reason I got lesson 1 then lesson 8 and didn’t download the ones in between til just now but even then things were so clearly explained that I could pick up lesson 8 with no trouble. But it’s also left me wanting the next one soon!
Keep up the good work, you’re a great teacher. I’ve wanted to learn mandarin for years now but never found the time, this method is perfect.

Hello Yao laoshi!
Thank you so much for this series of podcasts. Please continue.
I am going to Taiwan to teach at a university in the spring of 2007 and I need all the help I can get! I like the simplicity and “bite-size” of each podcast. Repeating episodes is not tedious and the ease and precision are excellent.
Best Wishes,
Craig

Dear Yao,
I am learning Chinese but I spend my days learning the characters. I think your course is brilliant for beginners. I look forward to the next lesson. Happy to help.

Hello Yao
I love your podcasts. Chinese seems like it is going to be much easier to learn than the other languages i am studying because of your podcast. However, I have listened to all your podcasts and there are not anymore. I was wondering when are you going to come out with some, because you havent made one in a month.
Good luck to your podcasting!

Dear learnchinesepod subscribers,
I have been receiving e-mails asking me for more podcasts, and wondering if we are stopping this project. The answer is no. I am now away for summer vacation and after my return, we will resume learnchinesepod.
In the mean time, feel free to post your comments, suggestions and love on this website!
Best,
Yao

I am an “older” student (60) and became interested in learning some Mandarin after chatting with Chinese people on Skype. I even managed to visit a dear friend in Taiwan last January. I must be the worst language student ever! I have never managed to grasp even the basics of any European language but your lessons are superb. I find it particularly useful when you pick up poor Kevin for his occasional sloppy pronunciation. It’s just what I need as I am not a good mimic and the repartition of difficult words is very useful. It is also essential for me to read the pinyin during the podcast. Having an extra visual clue helps me remember vocabulary. Could I suggest that occasionally you provide a vocabulary list (pdf) to cover say ten lessons? They could be printed off and used for revision and memorisation.
Thanks for your great podcasts……Please continue with them!!
Best wishes. Tony

Laoshi,
I just read your late August comment above–it is so good to know that you’ll be continuing your podcasts!
I also bought your book and have just ordered the new audio CD. Podcast/book/CD–three ways to study!
Thanks again for the quality presentations.
Xiexie,
Craig

Hi Yao
I’ve just discovered your podcast and I think it is brilliant. I’ve tried to learn Mandarin before but yours is the first one that really works for me.
I have lots of Chinese friends to practise with.
I love the podcast format, the pace, your clarity and the fact that your student’s name is Kevin.
